Vice President Richenda Carey joined trustees and volunteers from The Shaw Society at The Guildhall last week to celebrate Jeffrey Wei Liu’s appointment as Shaw Society Vice President - Asia Pacific. Jeffrey is a former international swimmer, Cambridge Fellow, entrepreneur, lawyer, and UNESCO Cultural Heritage Ambassador.
His admiration for Bernard Shaw stems from Shaw's 1933 visit to China, which encouraged Chinese writers, promoting the exchange of literature and ideas between East and West.
Trustee John Foley gave a speech welcoming and introducing Jeffrey. Which was followed by a presentation of a certificate and gifts by Chairman Maureen Clark Darby. Honoured guests Dr. Xiaojiu ZHU, MBE and Ms. Lijun BI Vice Chairman and Deputy Secretary General of UK Chinese Business Association gave short addresses at what was a very musical evening, reflecting Shaw's musical interests.
Recent graduates Guanting Di , who was Master of Ceremonies for the evening, and Xiaojiu Zhe delighted everyone with beautiful solo performances of opera, musical theatre and Chinese folk music. They also gave an impressive duet of a famous Chinese Folk song. Undoubtedly Shaw would have greatly enjoyed their singing!
The evening concluded with a short speech by Jeffrey in which he hoped as our new Vice President he would be able to share the genius of Bernard Shaw widely in the Asia Pacific region.
We're delighted to welcome Jeffrey to The Shaw Society.
