Wife to James Whelan
Date:
Jermyn Street Theatre

Teresa Deevy went to London in 1914 to learn lip-reading, returning to Ireland in 1919 to write plays, articles and stories for the press. In the 1930s, six of her plays were produced by the Abbey Theatre, Dublin. She was at the height of her reputation when the Abbey rejected Wife to James Whelan, as Ireland entered the increasingly conservative climate of the 1940s.
Now, in 2026, Mint Theater’s Jonathan Bank explores the work of this forgotten Irish genius with a timeless ensemble play in which love and pride collide.
